English singer-songwriter Maisie Peters has released a new single. John Hughes Movie, out on 26th February, is Peters’ first single of 2021. The track is the first to be released from the singer’s hotly-anticipated debut album, which is expected to be announced later this year.
Taking to Instagram, the singer wrote: “i wrote it with @hmichelsen and @defonbrune when i was 17 travelling up to london and getting lost in kings cross tryna find henrik’s studio, and then i waited and waited until it felt right to put it out. and then i was 20 and it felt right so i sent it to new transatlantic friends @afterhrs_ who finished it perfectly… and then it came out today and i walked round the city finding my silly little face on billboards in stations i’ve spent hours waiting in and dreaming of things like this.”
“it’s all because of u and i know i joke but really we are family and besties for life and it is my favourite thing ever making music for u. i could talk forever about this song and video and i will be posting a million things about it in the next few days because i’m excited but for now thank u thank u mp1 era begins now baby.”
The release was accompanied by a music video, which stars Peters and was directed by Louis Bhose. Speaking about the track, Peters says: “I wrote ‘John Hughes Movie’ when I was 17 about a house party that I had gone to. It’s a really honest depiction of being a hopeless, melodramatic teenager, being awkward and drunk and getting your heart broken by people you don’t even remember anymore. John Hughes films encapsulate that foolish romantic energy of high school and everything that I, a small town English wannabe Molly Ringwald wanted to be, but was not.”
Peters began to gain popularity in 2015 by posting original songs on YouTube. Her debut single Place We Were Made was released in 2017, followed by her first EP Dressed Too Nice for a Jacket in 2018. Her second EP It’s Your Bed Babe, It’s Your Funeral came out in 2019, and she released a series of singles during the 2020 lockdown, including Daydreams and Sad Girl Summer.
Her singles have appeared on Love Island and on the soundtrack for the film Birds of Prey. Peters was announced as a support artist for Niall Horan’s Nice to Meet Ya Tour, now due to take place this year. She has played at festivals such as the Great Escape, All Points East, and Barn On The Farm.
