English hip-hop artist, Loyle Carner, has released his new single Yesterday. The new track was produced by Madlib and premiered today on BBC Radio 1 as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World. This is the first new release in 2020 from the artist since the release of his second full-length album in 2019.
Yesterday was simultaneously released with an official music video, directed by Carner and his brother Ryan via The Coyle-Larner Brothers. The new song is politically charged and is Carner’s call for change and acceptance of the black community and brings light to modern-day discrimination around the UK.
Carner’s most recent studio album Not Waving, But Drowning, released in 2019, held similar themes of societal unrest. There is still no mention of a coming third studio album from Carner to date.

Carner began his career as the supporting act for many hip-hops artist that toured in the UK. In 2015 he was given the honour to perform on the John Peel Stage at the Glastonbury festival, but most notably he was the opener for the American rapper Naz at the 02 Academy Bristol concert in 2016.
A year later in 2017, he released his first debut album Yesterdays Gone to vast critical acclaim. The album was nominated for the Mercury Price and Carner was nominated for two Brit awards that year. The Independent named Yesterdays Gone album of the year, however none of the tracks on the album reached the top 100 in the UK.
Carner’s singles Ottolenghi, featuring Jordan Rakei and Loose Ends, with Jorja Smith were the first of Carner’s tracks to reach top 100 in the UK charts. Both singles were released from his second full-length album in 2019 Not Waving, But Drowning.
While Carner is still technically currently on tour to promote his album Not Waving, But Downing, all potential live and in-person concert dates have not been scheduled or cancelled. This is due to safety concerns surrounding the global health-crisis that is Covid-19. He is scheduled to play a few festivals in the spring and summer of 2021.
Yesterday is now streaming on all platforms and the music video for such is available via YouTube. Tickets are on sale now for Carner’s summer festival line-ups, available here.
