London Grammar have released their first new music in four years in the form of two versions of their new single, ‘Rooting For You’, as reported by NME. The song was premiered on Phil Taggart’s New Year’s Day Radio 1 show.
The band’s last full release was their debut; 2013’s acclaimed ‘If You Wait’ which has now sold over 300, 000 copies and spawned seven singles including ‘Nightcall’, ‘Metal & Dust’ and ‘Strong.’ In fairness to the band, however, they have kept fans interested by teasing them with a few covers and an unreleased album track, but with this new single it seems the band might finally be giving us something to get our teeth into.
‘Rooting For You’ is an intimate, eerie ballad that builds slowly to a crescendo to stir even the most hardened hearts as Hannah Reid’s vocals promise, ‘darling, I’ll be rooting for you.’ The release is actually better than just one single, as the band have, in fact, shared two versions of ‘Rooting For You’; a radio version and a live version with an extra couple of minutes of acapella Grammar for your enjoyment. The band joked as far back as 2015 that their next album would be a ‘cross between Pocahontas and Fleetwood Mac,’ according to DIY. However, on a more serious note, they did claim, even back then, that they had ‘some new music’, saying, ‘we’ve got quite a lot actually.’
The band were announced on the bill of ‘Flow Festival’, which will take place in Helsinki next year. They join Lana Del Ray, The xx, Aphex Twin and Jon Hopkins on the list of acts that have already been announced but there will be many more to come by the time London Grammar take to the stage.
In recent times the band have played their first ever show in Asia, despite extensive prior touring, at the Clockenflap in Hong Kong on November 26th. The band will play in Australia later this month in Fremantle, Western Australia on the 8th. Unfortunately, the band, through no fault of their own, found themselves at the centre of an extremely unfortunate incident at the Falls Music and Arts Festival held in Lorne, Victoria, Australia. Noise11 reports that 60 people were injured, 19 seriously, when a stampede and crush occurred after festival-goers exited one stage following a performance by DMA to see London Grammar on another stage. However, the festival continued and we should focus on the possibility of new music by the band today.
