This announcement comes after the band recently postponed the release of their third album. Californian Soil was intended to be released earlier this month on 12 February, however was pushed back for unknown reasons. The album is now set for release on April 9. Writer and vocalist Hannah Reid said of the album to Charlotte Krol for NME:
“This record is about gaining possession of my own life. You imagine success will be amazing. Then you see it from the inside and ask, ‘Why am I not controlling this thing? Why am I not allowed to be in control of it? And does that connect, in any way to being a woman? If so, how can I do that differently?'”
The record deals with themes of feminism and fame. Reid voices her own perspective having experienced misogyny in the music industry first-hand. The band has already released three singles from the upcoming album including the title track which they described as a ‘turning point’ for the upcoming album. Other releases include Lose Your Head and Baby It’s You.
Californian Soil is signature London Grammar, presenting their dreamy style alongside a moody and atmospheric beat reminicient of Massive Attacks Teardrop. This song provides a perfect opening to what has promised to be a more danceable album than the bands previous work. Baby It’s You futhers the bands evolution into electronic music with the help of acclaimed producer George FitzGerald. The song peaked at number 80 on the UK singles chart. Lose Your Head is an elegiac dance track with darker lyrics, reflecting on a defiant break out from a controlling releationship. These releases signal a new era for the band, elevating their ethereal and ambient sound with an electronic edge.
London Grammar is offering fans early access to tickets if they pre-order Californian Soil in any format before 3 pm on Monday 1st March.
