During a recent interview with The Observer, Little Simz revealed details of her fourth studio album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introverted’. The forthcoming LP will be preceded by her lead single ‘Introvert’, which is set to be released on April 21st.
‘Sometimes I Might Be Introverted’ will feature nineteen tracks, punctuated by spoken word interludes. Poised to be an expansive record, the upcoming album contrasts to the concision of her previously released LP ‘GREY Area’, which featured ten slick tracks and had a runtime of just 35 minutes. Released in 2019, the densely intricate album received widespread critical acclaim, won the Ivor Novello Album Award in 2020, and was perhaps one of the best UK hip-hop projects of the decade.
The Observer article also revealed that Simz’s new single ‘Introvert’ will be released this Wednesday. Incidentally, the artist teased a music video shot in London’s National History Museum on Instagram last week. Although it has not yet been confirmed, the video will likely provide the visuals to accompany the lead single.
Whilst discussing the title and theme of her forthcoming album in the interview, Simz said, “I know that I’m quiet, innit? I’m just very to myself and I didn’t know how to really navigate that, especially coming in this industry where you’re expected to have this extroverted persona all the time. I wanted to just let people know like, yo, I’m actually this way inclined.”
The 27-year-old added, “[The album is] me being this introverted person that has all these crazy thoughts and ideas and theories in my head and not always feeling like I’m able to express it if it’s not through my art.”
Whilst many artists did not release music during the 2020 lockdowns, this desire for artistic expression perhaps compelled Simz to release ‘Drop 6’ last year. Instrumentally stripped-back and lyrically reflective, the self-recorded 5-track EP perfectly captured the claustrophobic feelings of going through the everyday motions during lockdown. Judging by the title and her comments thus far, ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introverted’ will be another opportunity for Simz to explore such personal feelings.
Before she even dropped her first album, a Kendrick Lamar co-sign back in 2015 foreshadowed the rise of the Islington-born rapper. Through clever wordplay, nimble flows, and deft story-telling abilities, she has now placed herself at the forefront of a male-dominated genre. When we consider her music credentials alongside a fantastic acting performance in season three of ‘Top Boy‘, it is very hard to see a ceiling for the multi-talented star.
The release date for ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introverted’ is yet to be announced.
