Britpop veteran Liam Gallagher has said that he still wants an Oasis reunion. Speaking in a recent interview with The Times, Gallagher said “I’d love Oasis to get back together. If it happens, it happens. But I’m quite happy doing [my solo career]“.
Having broken up in 2009, the contentious personalities of the group’s two brothers (Liam and Noel Gallagher) were a large factor in its ending. However, Liam argues that “We should never have split up“.
Being trailblazers in both the rise and fall of the Britpop phenomenon in the nineties (their album Be Here Now is even credited with its decline), Oasis gave the genre some of its most iconic albums and songs, breaking records with both album sales and concerts. However, after almost thirteen years apart, the brothers clearly aren’t as close as they once were.
On his relationship with brother Noel, Liam says “I love him …. We split up nearly 13 years ago. It’s ridiculous. …. If he really wanted to get in contact, for my mum’s sake, he could do it, but he obviously doesn’t want to. There are only so many olive branches you can offer.“
Sadly, the feeling doesn’t appear to be mutual. Noel has said repeatedly that he’s not interested in reforming the band, saying their legacy is already “set in stone“. Busy with his new outfit, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the closest he’s come to agreeing was last year, naming his price as £100 million.
Speaking on the matter, Noel had this to say: “People ask me that question on a daily basis and I can only say to you that, I just don’t feel like it. When you’re in a band, it’s an absolute compromise … I like to march to the beat of my own drum. Oasis is done I’m afraid.“
On the bright side, Liam doesn’t seem to be doing so bad on his own. Having performed his new single “Everything’s Electric“ (co-written by Nirvana/Foo Fighters drummer Dave Grohl) at the BRIT Awards last Tuesday, maybe he doesn’t need his old band after all. A new album is also set to be released, titled C’MON, YOU KNOW, which should be out on May 27th. A performer at heart, Liam’s also got a tour coming up this June around the UK. If you’re interested in tickets, you can look here. The UK tour dates can be seen below.
