Hip-hop dame Lauryn Hill has celebrated the conclusion of her three month prison sentence for tax evasion with the release of a new single, ‘Consumerism’, and plans for a tour, in spite of being under house arrest.
‘Consumerism’ was mixed during Hill’s incarceration and is her second single of the year, after May’s, ‘Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)’. Both singles are said to appear on Hills forthcoming album, ‘Letters In Exile’, which would be her first release since 1998’s, ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’.
The former Fugees singer was charged with three counts of tax evasion in July last year, with over $500,000 owed in unpaid federal tax on her substantial income. She was convicted this summer and given a three month jail sentence, with a subsequent three month period of house arrest and a years probation In addition, Hill has paid back a total of just under $1 million in back taxes. She was given a more lenient sentence owing to her minor children and released four days early for good behaviour.
Hill supposedly intends to tour from November 15th until New Years Eve, which would clash with her period of house arrest, but has apparently cleared the situation with her judge, on the conditions that probation officers supervise the process.
