It has been confirmed that American pop icon Lady Gaga will perform at the 2016 Super Bowl, giving her own rendition of the USA’s national anthem. This news follows the announcement that Lady Gaga will be performing an “experimental tribute” to David Bowie at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
Lady Gaga joins Coldplay and Beyoncé on the line up of confirmed acts at this year’s Super Bowl, with Adele, Taylor Swift and Rihanna among a list of names rumoured to be added to the list of confirmed acts.
Last year’s national anthem performance was delivered by Let It Go singer Idina Menzel. In years gone by, artists such as Whitney Houston, Cher and Diana Ross have been honoured with the prestigious task, giving Lady Gaga big shoes to fill – although given her reputation for outrageous outfits, it would appear that she is no stranger to big shoes.
2016 has already kicked off with a string of accolades for Lady Gaga, having recently received the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television in wake of her role as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel. Additionally, Lady Gaga’s single Til It Happens To You, written for the soundtrack of 2015 documentary film The Hunting Ground, has been nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the Grammy Awards 2016, and for Best Original Song at the Annual Academy Awards 2016.
The NFL 2016 Super Bowl will air on CBS on Sunday 7th February, with UK viewers being able to tune in at 10:50pm on BBC Two.
