Kodaline have just dropped the music video for their first ever Christmas single This Must be Christmas. The song was originally released on the deluxe edition of the band’s latest album, One Day at a Time that came out earlier this month.
The video tells the story of an elf who thinks they have lost their job at Christmas, drowning their sorrows in a local pub, where she makes friends. It blends the idea of loneliness and the hardships people are facing this Christmas especially with the whimsical idea of the Christmas period.

The director of the music video, Lee Holmes spoke about the video saying; “The track is essentially about drowning your sorrows in a pub at Christmas, and I loved how the band had put their own stamp on the traditional Christmas song, so for the video I wanted to create that Christmas feel but with a twist, playing on the idea that Santa’s elves are like seasonal workers who live amongst normal people during the year, until Christmas comes.
He continued, saying; “And in these uncertain times it makes sense that their job security is in the balance, just like the rest of us. Kodaline have such a great track record for music videos, so it was a privilege to get to work with them and create a video for their alternative Christmas vision.” The song features on the band’s recent deluxe version of their album One Day at a Time.
The original album that came out in June and has been streamed over 60 million times and received another 100 million YouTube views. The deluxe edition features a collaboration with Gabrielle Aplin on their track Everyone Changes along with two covers of Teenage Kicks and The Rare Auld Times. These tracks will join the already released singles Wherever You Are, Sometimes, Saving Grace and Say Something.
This news comes following the announcement that Kodaline would be heading out on a UK tour. The band will be kicking off the tour in Oxford on the 17th of May 2021 before heading to Cambridge, Bexhill, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Leeds, Norwich, Bristol, Southampton and then will finish off the tour in the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire in London on the 2nd of June.
