The Bristolian native Katy J Pearson has continued on her conquest of dreamy indie-pop that gives a fuzzy sensation to all who chance upon it. Pearson’s forthcoming album titled Sound of The Mourning arriving on the 8th of July 2022 builds on her impressive catalogue and is set to feature some exciting collaborators, namely black midi drummer Morgan Simpson, who packs some punch into her latest single “Float”.
The song’s title is a perfect hint at the diaphanous tone that the sound occupies, with a gorgeously rendered intro of mellowed wobbly guitars before kicking off into Pearson’s steady brand of folky bliss. Her aptitude for a memorable chorus evidently knows no bounds as we find another hugely gratifying payoff which is reinforced by the robust rhythmic backbone (courtesy of Mr Simpson). It’s exciting to think of how Pearson’s voice might evolve over time, as it seems set that she has the songwriting gifts to propel her into a long and illustrious career. Long may it last!

Discussing her process in the creation of her new track, Pearson stated; “I wrote this track with Oliver Wilde, a founding member of the excellent Pet Shimmers – he’s been at the centre of the Bristol music community for several years. For the new album, I wanted to collaborate with some of my peers that I admire, so I jammed with Oli for a few weeks – he’d come round with his laptop and interface and we’d write songs together.”
She later added; “‘Float’ is one of the tracks that came out of those writing sessions and as soon as we wrote it I knew that it had to be on the record; it was one of my favourites to write and I love it. It has such an atmosphere and I think you can really feel the emotion and pain of the song; it’s about life experiences and all the things that lead up to certain moments. It’s quite nostalgic and given the past two years we have had, references wondering about when things will become more stable again.”
