Synth-pop prodigies ‘Hot Chip’, have collaborated with Brit-Pop icon Jarvis Cocker, on their brand-new track ‘Straight To The Morning’. The single dropped this morning (23rd November), mere weeks after the group’s last release ‘Late Night Tales’, their take on the iconic compilation album.
‘Straight To The Morning’ features the most notorious attributes of Hot Chip’s addictive sound, littered with swelling synths, an irresistible bassline, and blaring horns that feel reminiscent of the groups 2000s work. However, the inclusion of Cocker elevates the track entirely, adding some much-welcomed grit to the single’s disco flavour. The Brit-Pop darling’s call and response with Hot Chip lead singer Alexis Taylor highlights the difference in the two voices, and yet, the antithesis of Cocker’s husky vocals, and Taylor’s tenor-lines provides a contrast that truly balances the record. The result is a track that exudes a euphoria only found on a dancefloor at 2am, where the nights is forever, and the attendees are immortal.
The band collaborated with Cocker after performing a DJ set in Paris together, being inspired to create the club-focused track as a relief of sorts, from the ongoing global crisis. “‘Straight to the Morning’ is a disco anthem about going out, for a time when people really can’t, and it features our friend Jarvis Cocker urging us to go ‘straight through until the break of dawn,’” said Hot Chip. “Somehow he seems an unlikely figure in this all, and we like it that way.” Despite the unlikeliness of Cocker’s feature, the artist seems equally as impacted by the collaboration “This was the very last musical session I was involved in before lockdown. It felt very poignant to be singing a song about dancing all night long in a club whilst knowing it wouldn’t be possible to do such a thing for the foreseeable future.” Cocker stated on his instagram. “We danced around the studio quite a lot in the meantime though. It was fun to be a member of the Straight Through Crew for a day.”
The 80s inspired visuals provided for track are equally joyous, depicting a group of teenage girls at an unsupervised sleepover. Throughout the video we see them gorge on sweets, engage in Nerf gun wars, and perform Karaoke numbers, all while Jarvis Cocker serenades through a TV screen. It’s a celebration of youth, get-togethers, and having a good time, that like the track itself, radiates an infectious energy. Overall, Hot Chip’s new single is unmatched in how it entertains, and will stick with listeners until we can return to the dancefloor, and celebrate the captivating new single in style.
