A new game inspired by the widely popular word game Wordle has caused a great deal of excitement online. The game in question is Heardle, a game for music lovers created by Omakase. Heardle is available at Heardle.app and is built around a similar premise to the well-known online word game, which was launched by software engineer Josh Wardle earlier this year, and later bought by The New York Times Company.
When playing the game the goal of the user is to guess the song of the day, with snippets of the song given as clues. Players get up to six attempts to guess the correct answer, with the snippet becoming progressively longer with each failed attempt. Although one small difference is, unlike Wordle, you don’t have to make a guess each time, and you can skip through the sounds until you think you know the right answer.
Heardle also has a similar sharing feature that lets you copy a series of emojis to your clipboard so you can share your results on social media and tell your friends or followers how quickly you guessed the song. Below you can see drummer QuestLove sharing his Heardle result on Twitter where he jokes about the answers becoming more difficult and causing people to throw their phones out the window when playing the game.
Imma stay humble in the beginning cause I’ll start bragging like “pssssssh” & then they’ll start doin like Percy Faith’s #ThemeFromASummersPlace and we’ll be all throwing our phones out the window #Heardle #9

According to the game’s website, the songs are “plucked from a list of the most-streamed songs in the past decade”, so music lovers will mostly have a decent chance of guessing them. Although it may include some less well known tracks too, as it also pulls songs from the streaming platform SoundCloud. This may be good for smaller artists possibly giving them the opportunity to be heard when they otherwise wouldn’t be.
It’s the latest in a whole array of Wordle-inspired online games to have recently appeared, including Worldle which tests users’ geography knowledge, Dungeon which features fantasy characters over words and the battle royale version, Squabble, where up to 99 players can race to figure out the word correctly, losing health points if they guess incorrectly.
Wardle first created the original game Wordle for his wife Palak Shah before deciding to share it with his family. He then released it online where it became a huge hit, with people sharing their Wordle scores as coloured blocks on their social media accounts.
