Headie One, real name, Irving Adjei, has released his newest single, Breathing, off of his upcoming album EDNA, coming out this Friday 9th of October. This new single takes a step away from Headie One’s usual grittiness and brings an honest and open track, bringing a unique twist to the genre. The track talks about isolation, incarceration and the racial injustices faced by black people in the UK and around the world. You can listen to the new track below.
EDNA is dedicated to Headie One’s late mother, who passed away when he was just three years old. He released the tracklist on his social media accounts earlier this week. The album will feature twenty tracks and will include amazing features from artists such as Drake, Future, Stormzy and AJ Tracey, to name just a few.
This debut album comes following Headie’s release from prison after he was caught with a knife in his car. Headie talks a lot about his experiences in prison, as he has had a spell of convictions since he was seventeen years old. Speaking about the bleakness of prison life, he said to the Guardian: “The only thing that’s not taken away from you is yourself. It’s designed to break you down and to punish you.”
During his time, he turned to books about law of attraction. He says this brought hope into “a situation where a normal person would see it as ‘over, it’s done, you’re going to finish me off for ever.'” This helped to motivate him and plan for the future. After four months inside, Headie One left prison and instantly began to work. He has since released Rose Gold and Only You Freestyle, a song he recorded with Drake which will appear on EDNA.
Breathing is out now, Headie One’s debut album EDNA will be out this Friday, 9th of October. The tracklist for the album is below.
