It has been confirmed that Harry Styles has secured this week’s number one single. The singer’s solo release “As It Was” debuted at the top spot. The recently released track marks Styles’ second solo number-one single, with Styles’ first solo track “Sign Of The Times” peaking at number one in 2017.
The track not only marks a personal best for Styles but has broken a sales record, and has also garnered the biggest opening week so far for any track released in 2022. Released on 1st April, “As It Was” has accumulated over 94,000 chart sales and has reached an incredible 10.5 million streams over the week.
Due to the track’s streaming success, the release has also been named this week’s most downloaded song and has secured top billing within the Official Download Chart. “As It Was” also enjoyed the most profitable week for UK streams for a single thus far into the year, a title previously held by LadBaby featuring Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John for their Christmas single “Sausage Rolls For Everyone”.
This week’s number one single has also been received with commercial success outside of the UK; “As It Was” has also gained traction within Ireland, Australia and across numerous European countries. Styles co-wrote the track with Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson. Both producers have worked with the 28-year-old singer on his previous solo albums Fineline and Harry Styles. Styles began to tease the single’s music video at the end of March; the foreshadowing posts showed Styles in a Bowie-esque jumpsuit which features within the final cut. The artistic music video was directed by Tanu Muino, the renowned artist’s work can be seen in many popular music videos including the mega-hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” by Lil Nas X.
The former Boyband member’s second number-one is the lead single to be taken from his upcoming album, Harry’s House. The hotly anticipated release is the singer’s third studio album and is set to be released on 20th May 2022 via Columbia and Erskine Records. In preparation for the upcoming release date, Styles began the album’s promotional schedule earlier this year. The singer took to social media to post cryptic content including a short trailer, mysterious websites and additional accounts were also set up to further promote the album.
Due to Styles’ big win, Dave’s recently released single “Starlight” has dropped to number two on the UK charts. The single was released on 3rd March 2022 and debuted at number one. The British rapper-singer’s track spent four weeks at number one and became his second number-one single. Also debuting on the charts this week is “When You’re Gone” by Canadian singer Shawn Mendes. The track placed at number 32 and has become the 23-year-old artist’s 12th track to crack the UK top 40.
Music fans will be able to catch Styles live this spring; the singer is set to return to the UK in June for his 2022 tour. The UK leg of the tour will kickstart on 11th June 2022 with a performance in Glasgow and will conclude with a set in Ireland on 22nd June 2022.
