Frank Ocean has won the libel case that his father brought forward against him. Calvin Cooksey, Oceans estranged father sued him for defamation, asking for $14.5 million (£11.25 million) in damages. The lawsuit comes as a response to a note Ocean posted on Tumblr in June 2106, after the Orlando nightclub shooting. The note discussed the need for LGBTQ pride.
“Many hate us and wish we didn’t exist. Many are annoyed by our wanting to be married like everyone else or use the correct restroom like everyone else,” he writes. “Many don’t see anything wrong with passing down the same old values that send thousands of kids into suicidal depression each year. So we say pride and we express love for who and what we are. Because who else will in earnest?”
The note mentions his father behaving transphobically when Ocean was a child, saying ““I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty,” he writes. “That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.” However, Cooksey denied the accusations and claimed that Ocean has ruined “future financial opportunities in the music and film industries” and also called him a “fraud who only cared about making millions of dollars”
Oceans attorney confirmed to Pitchfork that the judge had ruled in Oceans favour and said “It was a super sad case, I am sorry that my client had to go through this and am glad that we could bring closure.”
This is not the first time that Frank Ocean has mentioned financial issues with his father. Back in 2012, Ocean tweeted that his father wanted to sue him for $1000,000.
