Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton has revealed her musical preference, she has stated that she would rather be part of a band than a solo artist.
Bunton recently spoke with The Guardian Newspaper concerning her fondness of being part of a band. In the interview, she was asked what her greatest fear is, in response the singer stated. “Being on my own – I love being in a team. I am so glad I was in a group and wasn’t solo, because I would have found that hard.”
In the interview Bunton also spoke about an accident in which left her hospitalised, she was asked to describe her most embarrassing moment to which she replied. “In Vegas in 2007, I fell over on stage with the Spice Girls – and it was horrible, really, really embarrassing. I had to go straight to hospital.”
The singer has experience as part of a group as well as a solo artist, having seen it from both sides it would appear that this may have informed her decision. After her initial time as Baby Spice within one of the biggest girl groups of all time, Bunton went solo with her debut album ‘A Girl Like Me’ released on 16th April 2001. The singer’s first solo venture was a successful one, her debut sold over 21,500 copies within its first week of release and peaked at number four within the UK album charts and was eventually certified gold.
The album’s lead single ‘What Took You So long?’ gave Bunton her first solo number one chart position, and the album sired two more chart successes with ‘Take My Breath Away’ charting within the top 5 and ‘We’re not gonna sleep tonight’ landing within the top twenty. The singer then released her second solo album, ‘Free Me’ released on 9th February 2004 and landed at number seven within the charts. The album also sired three singles which charted within the top 5. The most successful singles included the album’s title track ‘Maybe’ and ‘I’ll Be There’, Bunton was also a performer at Party at the Palace which was held in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee for Elizabeth ii on 3rd June 2002.
In more recent news, her last solo venture was the release of her Christmas single ‘Coming Home For Christmas’ released in November 2019. The release also included a cover of the Christmas hit ‘Santa Baby’ originally performed by Eartha Kitt and released in 1953. Shortly after on 6th December 2019 Bunton performed her first solo show in a decade at the famous Royal Albert Hall. The performance was a special one-off Christmas themed show and also featured Will Young, Bros member Matt Gross and Bunton’s partner Jade Jones, with whom she has two children.
Bunton has now turned her attention to TV, she is the presenter of The Great American Baking Show. The singer has also become a published author and has published a book which acts as a guide for new parents entitled ‘Mama You Got This’. Perhaps the title is a wink to the 1996 Spice Girls single ‘Mama’. Bunton has not forgotten her musical formations, the singer presents her own weekly program for the radio station Heart FM.
