Eels have shared the latest single from their upcoming 14th studio album. “Amateur Hour” is the album’s upbeat and bouncy opening track. At under three minutes long, it is a snappy and biting helter-skelter of a performance. It is a great piece of indie rock with a raw somewhat unprocessed feel. The production is simple, with no fancy arrangement; just distorted guitar and drums with some fun lyrics.
The new single follows on from previously released singles “The Magic”, “Steam Engine” and “Good Night On Earth”. All the singles will feature on their latest album Extreme Witchcraft which the band announced details of last year which is due to be released on January 28 via PIAS and their own E Works Records. You can listen to the track below.
Speaking of working on the new record, Mark Everett or E as he is often known said: “John Parish is one of the most even-tempered, polite people I’ve ever met. A true gentleman. Actually he’s probably THE most polite person I’ve ever met. But when he gets into the studio he becomes a mad scientist. “If you make music with John Parish, you get stuff no one else does. He has a really unique toolbox and musical outlook. Perhaps his politeness is a coping mechanism to keep Mr. Hyde under control when he’s out of his laboratory.” Extreme Witchcraft can be pre-ordered here.
Eels have had one of the most consistently acclaimed careers in music. The ever-changing project of Mark Everett has released 13 studio albums since their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak. He is also a published author with his highly acclaimed 2008 book ‘Things the Grandchildren Should Know’ as well as staring in the award-winning Parallel Worlds, a documentary about the search to understand his quantum physicist father, Hugh Everett III. They are also set to head to the UK and Ireland in March for a tour in support of their new LP. The band will be starting in Belfast on March 11, concluding with a date at the O2 Guildhall in Southampton on March 18 before heading to Europe. You can view all the dates and ticket details here.
