Ed Sheeran, Yungblud and Little Mix are among the UK winners at the MTV EMA ceremony that took place last night (14th November) in Budapest, Hungary. It was the first live show since 2019. This year the awards were supporting the LGBTQ+ community and were hosted by Saweetie.

Despite recent anti LGBTQ+ legislation in Hungary, organisers defend the decision to host them in that country. The biggest winners of the night were K-Pop group BTS snatching four awards in total: Best Pop, Best Group, Bst K-Pop and Biggest Fans. Ed Sheeran has won two awards, for Best Artist and Best Song for “Bad Habits”. Best Alternative went to Yungblud, who said in a speech: “If you are out there and you feel you cannot be who you are – you can be. Keep fighting, keep being brilliant”.
Eurovision winners Måneskin won a statue for Best Rock. Little Mix has won an award for Best UK & Ireland Act for the fifth time. This year they run up against Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa. The Best US Act went to Taylor Swift. Little Mix Jade Thirwall said accepting the award remotely: “Thank you so, so much. This is amazing, to win Best UK & Ireland Act again. Thank you, thank you, thank you – we can’t believe it.”
“We’re so gutted that we can’t be at the show tonight, but thank you so much to MTV and all of our incredible, incredible fans for their support. It really does mean the world to myself and the girls” she added.
Show host and performer Saweetie has won Best New, Nicki Minaj won Best Hip-Hop and Olivia Rodrigo – Best Push and Billie Eilish was honoured with the Video for Good award. Justin Bieber who has been nominated in eight categories hasn’t won any this year. The MTV EMAs saw performances from Ed Sheeran who sang “Overpass Grafitti” and “Shivers”, Maluma who did “Mama Tetema’ and Saweetie with “Best Friend”, “Tap In” ‘ and “Out Out” among others. Yungblud closed the night with the performance of his latest single “Fleabag”.
