Following the airing of a special TV programme ‘Friends: The Reunion’ on HBO last week, Ed Sheeran has recreated an iconic dance from ‘Friends’ with Courtney Cox. The dance is featured in season 6 episode 10 ‘The One With the Routine’ (aired in 1999), which is about Ross and Monica reenacting and perfecting their dance routine all the way back from high school. Ed Sheeran has taken the role of Ross to recreate this dance on a field with Courtney Cox. At the end of the video, they both stumble and fall over, laughing.
The fan reactions to this Instagram post have been overwhelming – @peet5west commented: “THE COLLAB WE NEVER KNEW WE NEEDED”, whilst @edsheeran_eu wrote: “Amazing. are you going to do these dance moves on tour too?” and @teddyed_11 wrote: “That’s the content we signed up for. Who needs album news when we can have you dancing ?”
In a podcast, the director Ben Winston clarified why Ed Sheeran and this dance collaboration was not at the reunion: “They just couldn’t remember it. I don’t think they wanted to dance in front of that studio. They’re like, ‘Don’t make us dance in front of a crowd of people, It’s one thing doing it when you’re playing Ross and Monica. It’s another thing when everybody’s sitting there, like, staring.”
Ed Sheeran has revealed that there are many singles to be released in due course. In an interview with Radio 1’s Jordan North before headlining Radio 1’s Big Weekend, he said: “My first single was meant to be ready for now, and I was meant to be playing it at One Big Weekend. But the video’s got a lot of pre-production that needs to be done on it.”
He added: “I’m using a band for the first time and it feels like the next stage. I’ve done band stuff before but only at the request of TV shows. The first single is really different – like really, really different.”
