Punk rock trio Dream Wife has finally shared the second studio album titled ‘So When You Gonna…‘. The album is a follow-up to 2018’s highly-praised self-title debut, led by hard-hitting single “Sport!“, “Hasta La Vista“, and the title track.
It is high time for the UK indie scene to rejoice once again, as the critic-beloved indie band Dream Wife has returned with their second effort, and it is better than ever! ‘So When You Gonna…‘ is the title of their latest offering that the members promised to use as a challenge to gender imbalance in the music industry.
“The album was recorded with a full team of women. Female producers are less than 5% in the industry. It was a real eye-opener working with this team, and they’re incredible,” the group talked with Annie Mac at Radio 1 back in March. Accordingly, they picked Marta Salogni, a rising producer who has worked many acclaimed artists with the likes of FKA twigs, Björk, and Frank Ocean.
Guitarist Alice Go told Dork about the band’s experience working with Salogni: “It felt like a really important thing for this [record] to be produced by Marta and this incredible team of women.” Go affirmed that working with an all-female production team for ‘So When You Gonna…‘ was “a real practicing-what-we-preach situation.”
‘So When You Gonna…‘ includes eleven tracks that blend music from the indie and alternative spectrums, resulting in a head-banging collection of punk rock bangers that overflow with female empowerment and defy prevalent male domination. “Sport!” led the album’s roll-out, with its screaming and kicking melody infused with a series of unapologetic cursing and daring the listeners to “put your money where your mouth is.”
So far, the album has received widespread rave from leading music critics. Legendary NME gave four stars to ‘So When You Gonna…‘, calling it “the swagger of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the sneer of riot grrrl“; meanwhile, The Irish Times deemed the record filled with “an intoxicating mix of trashy fun and insightful commentary.”
Apart from releasing new music, the London-based trio also launched their own podcast dubbed as same as the sophomore full-length. The ‘So When You Gonna…‘ podcast has seen the ladies of Dream Wife invite a host of female rebellious fellows, such as The Big Moon’s Soph Nathan, Adele Slater, Girli, and many more.
