dodie has released her newest single Hate Myself today, the 12th of January. The single was featured on Annie Mac’s Hottest Record this evening, where dodie described the meaning of the song saying; “It’s basically like, I think relationships in the past have made me feel uneasy when someone goes quiet and they’re dealing with their problems introspectively and I begin to blame myself.”
Hate Myself was accompanied by a compelling music video, directed by Sammy Paul. The video shows dodie training, Rocky-style for a job as a mail carrier. In true dodie fashion, the stunning video sucks you in and leaves you idolising both dodie and her work.
This isn’t dodie’s first release off her album Build a Problem. Cool Girl came out in October after being featured as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record. The intimate track tells the story of how we sometimes make ourselves smaller in order to fit into people’s perceptions of how we should be. The song was followed up by Rainbow which was released last month and is about the importance of pride and the shame that comes with being a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Speaking about her upcoming album to The Metro, dodie said; “I think I was going through a crisis actually, I was very unsure of who I was and I was trying to figure it out in music. So I think it’s quite unstable of an album – but it’s definitely honest.” She also added; “I’d like people to come away from this album knowing what I can do.”
dodie will also be doing a tour to support the album which will kick off on the 19th of September 2021 in the O2 Apollo in Manchester before heading to Glasgow, Birmingham, Southampton, Bristol before finishing off the UK tour in Eventim Apollo in London on the 27th of September. Speaking to Annie Mac about the tour, dodie said; “I’m going to lose my mind, I’m going to go so hard for that first show.” dodie recently uploaded a video to Instagram about how much she missed touring.
