Following the release of their latest studio effort Off Planet, London-based art rock outfit Django Django have premiered a music video for “Slipstream”, a cut from the fourth side of the eclectic double album BrooklynVegan has dubbed “their best since their debut”.
Directed by Daniel Nellis, the video – which sees lead singer Vincent Neff cycling through a parallel universe to the hypnotic beat of his band’s trance-infused dance anthem – boasts impressive neon visuals and an interesting backstory. The group explains via their socials:
“The lyrics are a bit of an ode to watching the Tour de France with Pete Shelley’s signature track playing as a kid. We thought it would be fun to build upon that with the video, which sees Vinny being put through his paces, ramping up in speed until he breaks beyond reality.”
Nellis adds: “In ‘Slipstream’ we join Vinny on his wayward journey through a twilight town. In this parallel universe characters are stuck in motion forever, their soundtrack cosmically transmitted between them, leaving each other in a state of ecstasy. Vinny’s search for his non-existent destination leaves him in ever increasing kinetic states of blissful speed fed highs, leaving the others in his world forever and ever in his Slipstream.”

The kaleidoscopic visuals provide the perfect accompaniment to the synth-laden sonic landscape concocted by a revitalised Django Django. “Slipstream”, like the rest of the tracks on Off Planet, was born out of lockdown, when the group chose to approach their songwriting from a different angle, abandoning all preconceived rules, embracing widespread collaboration and exploring new ideas.
In an effort to deconstruct the band’s identity, Django Django co-founder and producer Dave Maclean drew from their long history of disparate influences, delivering a new range of sounds and rhythms intended to convey the astral themes of the record. Soon enough, the concept of a double album – with each side representing a different planet – was formed.
The result is a sprawling, unpredictable and genre-bending project whose release plan is every bit as unconventional as its presentation (the band unveiled each of the four sides in respective monthly instalments).
In support of their new record, Django Django have announced an Off Planet headline UK and European tour.
