South London-based singer Deno, real name Deno Michael Mebrahitu, has released a new single and video for ‘Lingo’ featuring American rapper J.I and British YouTuber Chunkz. The music video features the artists flexing their cars and money, sharing drinks around a table full of cash with lyrics such as: “Now you’re talking my lingo/ Big stacks/ Every day we making cash”. It has currently has over 500k views already.
Deno started his career by making and sharing music casually with friends at school on social media before getting recognised by Stormzy to work with him on his album ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ and having success with hit single ‘London’ in 2018, a collaboration with AJ – the pair went on to perform at Wireless Festival in 2018. He continued to have commercial success when his single ‘Advice’ topped the UK Independent Singles Breakers Chart.
The 18-year-old artist describes his music as a mix of R&B, Afro Wave, Trap, Soul and Pop, with inspirations from Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, The Weeknd and Akon. He expanded on what makes his music unique, saying: “I’ve got that street-smart aura. I’ve got that cool, young, fresh sound. I can do more than just one genre. I don’t just do Afroswing. I did a song the other day with Chip on a rhythmic drill beat. I can do the singing thing and the half-sing, half-rap thing. It takes me to different audiences.”
There is no doubt that Deno is one the youngest, freshest, up-and-coming artist in the UK music scene and we can expect quality tracks from ‘Boy Meets World’ – it is clear he balances a fuse of trends and originality into his music. Deno’s new mixtape will be out 14th May and can be pre-ordered here.
