Veteran Scottish rockers Del Amitri have announced details for their upcoming seventh album Fatal Mistakes, which is due out on the 30th April 2021. The new LP will mark a comeback for the band – who have largely been on hiatus since 2002’s Can You Do Me Good? – and their fist release on Acton-based record label Cooking Vinyl, which they joined this summer.

In a statement released on the band’s website, lead singer Justin Currie said “‘Fatal Mistakes’ were made over three weeks in March, in a stately home in deepest England — thirteen of them — resulting in the first Dels’ studio album since ‘Can You Do Me Good’. A fine time was had by all. It’s a collection of bizarre tales of poisoning, pleading and bitter acceptance, powered by guitars, drums and keyboards played entirely by the quintet who had such enormous fun on the road in 2014 and ‘18.”
Del Amitri’s co-manager Andy Prevezer has hinted that the new material – which the band finished recording on the night before the UK-wide lockdown came into force in March – will provide plenty of highlights for fans of the Glasgow outfit who made their name in the 1990s with hits like Roll To Me, Nothing Ever Happens and Always The Last To Know. In a recent interview with MusicWeek he said: “It sounds like a classic Del Amitri album: hugely melodic, lyrically acute and absolutely right for these difficult times. We’re very excited.”
Fans got their first taster of the new record today with the unveiling of new track Close Your Eyes and Think of England. Justin Currie describes the sweeping and melodic piano-driven number as “…our European valediction, a ballad of pure bile and remorse, sweetened by a sledgehammer of sarcasm.”
The Glaswegian rockers will debut another song from the new album live on tonight’s BBC Scotland Children In Need. Scottish viewers can tune in to watch the performance from 10pm tonight, and it will broadcast shortly afterwards online via the IPlayer.
Del Amitri were due to close out 2020 with a sold-out benefit gig for NHS workers at Scotland’s Barrowland Ballroom on 9th December, which is now likely to be rescheduled for the new year. Justin Currie had previously spoken about how the gig would be a much-needed moment of escapism, saying “The Barrowland Ballroom is a sort of heaven for us and what better way to get out of this hell?”
