The South African born, Germany based alternative pop singer has recently unveiled the first track taken from her upcoming live record We Followed Every Sound.
Cruelty On Beauty On has already seen the light of day this year, when it appeared in her fourth studio album, Rivonia. But now the songs from the record are being given the remix treatment, but not in the way you might think. When a radio station in Potsdam, Germany offered to reproduce the songs with added texture and the backing of an entire orchestra, it was a pretty easy decision to make. The German Film Orchestra of Balebsberg were recruited and led by Bernd Wefelmayer, they created something so vast and impressive that it would be a travesty for it to go unnoticed. It might not feature the synthesisers that make up any pop song these days, but that is what makes it stand out, what makes it different, and what makes it so interesting to listen. Cruelty On Beauty On shows just what they are capable of, with the distinctive vocals of Dear Reader, real name Cheri MacNeil, shining through with a huge backing of strings, keys and a choir to name a few, it’s a good thing they got an orchestra in, because they’ll need a lot of people to deal with a sound this big.
Rivonia was a record made up of stories, tales and anecdotes written by MacNeil about her life growing up in South Africa, and she received praise from all over the board for her witty lyrics and ability to tell a story through the use of song. With We Followed Every Sound due for release on 9th December, it could be one to catapult her to the next level, and make 2014 one she could never have dreamt of experiencing growing up in South Africa.
