David Bowie prepared a number of compilation albums to be released after his death, with the first set for a 2017 release, according to a Newsweek article.
With Bowie now gone, his estate remains, which includes an impressive archive of over 75,000 objects. The Newsweek article explores the fate of this archive, but perhaps the most exciting revelation for fans pining for new Bowie music is the prospect of more music from the abundance of Bowie’s creative imagination.
An unnamed source that was allegedly close to Bowie told Newsweek there is “a long list of unscheduled musical releases that Bowie planned before he died.” Furthermore the music is apparently divided up into eras, although they won’t necessarily be released in chronological order, and the first release could be as early as 2017.The prospect of unreleased material appearing on the albums is also a good possibility, as past reissues of Bowie’s work have before.
Bowie’s producer Tony Viscotti also claimed that Bowie was working on an entirely new album in the weeks leading up to his death, with unreleased material from that project existing, but whether that ever sees the light of day or not is still unknown. Another release for Bowie fans wanting more to look forward to is also the cast album of Bowie’s off-Broadway musical Lazarus, which stars Michael C. Hall.
Fans of Bowie can take solace then, that even in death Bowie has plans to release more music. Somewhat fitting for the performance artist who’s last character was Lazarus.
