With many artist who make a comeback after over a decade of absence, they return from audience demand. Fans who were initially following these artists aged their late-tens or early twenties are now still loyal in their mid-thirties.
However, some artists double their fan base: a new crop of young followers alongside the original fans. Craig David is astonished about his new brand of fan.
In 1999, if you heard the word ‘Instagram’, the only possible link would be that of kiss-a-gram! But Craig David has his young followers he can access as he commented on in a recent interview:
“When I look at my Instagram, there’s 13-year-old kids saying ‘Have you heard of this guy Craig David?’ That’s cool to me.”
“If I’m brand new to you, that’s wonderful. And then you’ve got people who grew up with my music who are like, ‘oh man, this is giving us the feel of when we were in our twenties going out raving’.”
Craig David arrived on the back of the UK garage scene and stormed in popularity with the 1999 ‘Re-wind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)’ with the Artful Dodger on his album It’s All About the Stragglers.
As music changes, so has garage since the late-90s and young followers of Craig David will draw links with the growing grime scene. He said:
“Now it’s [grime] starting to get more commercial success – just seeing names like Stormzy and Skepta getting recognised by American artists that are coming over; the whole Boy Better Know crew coming through. It’s an exciting time.”
Craig David’s new single ‘One More Time’ has been long awaited for those original fans.
