‘Coldplay: Reimagined’ is the name of the new short film and EP, released by Coldplay on 21st February – and they’re only available to Apple Music users. The film is a 9 minute long video showing the recording process and including clips of Chris Martin and bandmate Johnny Buckland discussing how their ideas for the project came about and were brought together.
Within the film, the pair focus on three songs from their 2019 album ‘Everyday Life’, creating a new sound. Martin says “Today we tried to strip back some of these songs which were already quite stripped back. We did that by removing two band members”.
‘Cry Cry Cry’, ‘BrokEn’, and ‘Champion of the World’ were the song choices, reworked with Martin on piano, Buckland on guitar, gospel backing vocals, and strings. To record, Martin and Buckland worked with producers Rik Simpson, Dan Green, and Bill Rahko (known as The Dream Team).
The short film follows the release of two new music videos for ‘Cry Cry Cry’ and ‘Champion of the World’, both out this month. The former has 3 million views since it came out on Valentine’s Day, with its ’50s theme dance montage. When speaking in the ‘Reimagined’ film, Martin said, “The song Cry Cry Cry has been brewing since we saw Back to the Future with the song ‘Earth Angel’ – with that fifties doo-wop thing is so fun.” Furthermore, it was co-directed by none other than Dakota Johnson alongside Cory Bailey.
Coldplay’s latest album, including all band members, was released in November 2019 as a double album. ‘Everyday Life’ is their eighth studio album, and the eighth to debut at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart. Due to the environmental impact of touring, Martin announced prior to the album release that they would not be going on tour until they can find a way to make sure it’s not only sustainable, but beneficial. Fortunately, fans will be able to watch Coldplay at Global Goal Live: The Possible Dream on 26th September.
The full members who make up the band are Chris Martin (lead vocals, piano), Johnny Buckland (guitar, backing vocals), Guy Berryman (bass, backing vocals), and Will Champion (drums, percussion, backing vocals). Founded in 1996, they hold a total of 9 Brit Awards and 7 Grammys and have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling artists. They are well-known for supporting social and political issues such as the climate crisis.
