Circa Waves has announced the release date of their fourth studio album ‘Sad Happy‘. The release of this new album will follow a growing trend of a double-album, with the band planning to launch the first part ‘Sad‘ in the beginning of 2020, followed by the other part ‘Happy‘ a couple of months later.
It has been less than a year for the Liverpool band that just released their third LP ‘What’s It Like Over There?‘ back in last April. The album saw the band’s departure from their thunderous guitar tunes and garage rock sounds in their first two albums to an experiment with pop and R&B music. Now, Circa Waves is about to release a new album titled ‘Sad Happy‘ that splits into two parts. The frontman Kieran Shudall gave details into the band’s new LP with NME. He said that the plan to release this album in two distinct chunks is thanks to the way pop and hip-hop are changing their strategy to release music:
“We were inspired by how quickly pop and hip-hop move and didn’t want to be left behind. We felt like alternative music needed a quicker turnaround. People tend to consume music at such a high rate now. An album, as soon as it’s released, it’s kind of done with and people expect the next thing.”
Despite such obvious denotation of each part, Shudall promised that their fans can expect upbeat tunes from both parts, as he explained that what makes these two parts different is rather the “vibe of the lyrics”. He also further unfolded that each part tackles a different topic: The ‘Happy’ side is the “antidote to the terrible things going on today,” whereas the ‘Sad‘ one is to do with the singer “being a young man growing up and the anxieties, and the strangeness of growing older.”
The four-piece alternative rock band debuts ‘Jacqueline’, a first taste off ‘Happy’ that talks about, according to the same interview, “a struggling mother who I knew who was extremely sleep-deprived and going through a really hard time with a newborn”. The song still retains the band’s guitar signature from their original albums and a pop hook from their latest LP. Listen to the track below:
