The Britpop legends have pulled out of their headline slot at the Australian festival Big Day Out, claiming they were unhappy with the way it was being run.
The news was revealed by the London quartet on their Facebook page, with the group revealing that the organisers had “let them down”. The statement in full is below.
“Devastated to report that Blur won’t be performing at BDO in 2014. It’s a shock that it has come to this.
Only 8 weeks to go, the band feels that with the constantly shifting goalposts and challenging conditions of the organisers, they can’t let it drag on any longer and want to make this announcement, to be clear to Blur fans that they won’t be there. We’ve done our very best to work with the organisers and considered every option to make it happen, but they’ve let us down and let everyone else down too.”
The festival, which is set to tour the country between January and February of next year, is still going ahead with other headliners Pearl Jam and Arcade Fire set to go ahead with their performances. AJ Maddah, one of the investors in the festival spoke to fans on Twitter yesterday, saying “Am trying to find out [what’s happened] myself. Far as I know BDO gave into every demand within the possibility of curfews & public safety. Everyone at BDO is absolutely devastated and confused by this turn of events. All we can do is to replace them and bring you the best show possible.” A replacement headliner is already in the works, with Maddah saying, “We’re working on that now. We have a list of targets and are making contact with them all, everyone at BDO will be working through the night to find replacement.” An announcement is set to be made in the coming days.
