The highly influential and celebrated indie rock group Pavement have announced a 2022 UK and European tour, more than ten years on from their last reunion in 2010.
In 2019, the band initially declared two reunion shows at the 2020 Primavera Sound festivals however, these were cancelled due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Now, the band is set to bring their jangling guitar riffs and whimsical, cryptic lyrics to the UK and Europe come October 2022, following two shows at Primavera Sound in June.
Anyone familiar with the raw beauty of the 1990s American indie rock scene can tell you that Pavement were-and still are a household name, their sound undeniably defining an era alongside other titans of the genre such as Silver Jews, Dinosaur Jr. and Modest Mouse. The group’s output is impressive given their ten-year lifespan as an active band, putting out ten EPs and five full-length studio albums between 1989 and 1999.
In 2010, Pavement reunited for the first time since their breakup in 1999, having played their final show at Brixton Academy in London just four months after the release of the album Terror Twilight. Upon the announcement of their 2010 reunion, Matador Records, who presently represent Pavement’s musical catalogue, were clear about one thing; “Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.”
More than ten years later, this statement has proved to be somewhat untrue however, there has been no indication that the group intends to permanently reunite or release new music. Many of the members have been involved with other musical projects since Pavement’s initial breakup in 1999, with singer Stephen Malkmus releasing music under his own name and with the project Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, and guitarist Scott Kannberg presently working as a solo artist under the name Spiral Stairs.
