Adele’s career has gone from strength to strength since her debut album 19 in 2008, and the last few months have been monumental for the British singer – with Hello, the lead single from her third studio album 25, breaking multiple world records and topping the charts in 85 countries.
Following the success of 25, Adele dominated this year’s BRIT Awards ceremony, winning four awards and closing the night with a live performance of new single When We Were Young. This was preceded by live performances from a host of nominees including Justin Bieber, Jess Glynne, The Weeknd, Coldplay and James Bay, as well as a stunning tribute to David Bowie featuring pop singer Lorde and Bowie’s former tour band. Bowie posthumously won the BRITs Icon Award, accepted on his behalf by Bowie’s friend Gary Oldman following an emotional speech.
Adele fought off competition from artists such as Coldplay, James Bay and Florence + The Machine to win the acclaimed MasterCard British Album of the Year. She broke down earlier in the evening upon accepting the Global Success Award, presented to her from space by Major Tim Peake, confessing in her acceptance speech:
I got really lost for a while and didn’t know I would come back.
Upon receiving her first award of the night for Best British Female Solo Act, Adele publicly showed support for Kesha in the wake of Kesha’s legal battle with producer Dr Luke following allegations of sexual harassment.
Adele went on to say later in the evening,
Not bad for a girl from Tottenham who don’t like flying.
