These New Puritans have announced the release of their forthcoming fourth studio album due out on March 22nd titled “Inside the Rose.” Here is the video for the title track directed by Harley Weir. This follows the albums first single “Into the Fire” released in November which was their first release in five years. Says band member Jack Barnett: “The songs are about beauty, transcendence, desire, oblivion, ecstasy and eyes.”
TNP are from the are of Southend-on-Sea, consisting of Barnett who serves as the bands songwriter, producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist and his twin brother George who provides the drums, metallophone and loops. Thomas Hein was also a member from 2006-2016 providing the sampler, keyboards, percussion and bass. Sophie Sleigh-Johnson was a member from 2006 until 2010, also providing keyboards and sampler. They have previously recorded and released three albums, their debut being “Beat Pyramid” in 2008, which was followed by “Hidden” in 2010 and their most recent was 2013’s “Field of Reeds”.
Barnett has said that hip hop groups such as the Wu Tang Clan have been an influence on the band as well as Aphex Twin and interestingly the cartoon series “The Smurfs.” Their sound has been compared to that of the Sheffield-synth sound as well as Sonic Youth. They are known for unusual and non-conventional approach to performing rock music, such as incorporating instrumental sections into multiple songs.
They use a wide variety of instrumentation, such as the bassoon, often with the intent of mixing diverse sounds together. They take their influences from a wide-spanning range of different eras, even dating back to before the 20th century. They have shown this in their live performances like in 2010 when they were accompanied by a five-piece woodwind-brass ensemble. During this period they performed the entirety of “Hidden” live featuring said ensemble as well as other unorthodox collaborators such as a children’s choir at places such as the Barbican Centre. Barnett has an interest in world music and likes to incorporate this into both live performances and studio recordings.
Their song “We Want War” was featured on the soundtrack to the 2010 computer game “Assassins Creed: Brotherhood” and in 2012 they remixed the Bjork song “Mutual Core” which was featured on the remix album “Bastards.”
Other projects that they have involved in include one with designer Hedi Silmane where they recorded the song “Navigate Navigate” for the Dior Homme Hiver 2007 live show. In addition to this they took part in a performance in Paris at Palais de Tokyo for the Stage of Art’s after show.
