Recently the Baltimore epic stoner rock troupe came to the UK on tour, and during their trip they recorded a ‘John Peel’ style session, specifically for Southern Records’ Latitudes imprint. ‘John Peel’ sessions are designed to capture a unique recording chosen by the group themselves, mixed in the same day and then given a special packaging. Here comes the good news. It is coming your way soon.
The songs which the group have decided to cover are a variety from the Canadian folk singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, a far cry from the usual psychedelic, massive sounding tracks that are produced by Arbouretum. But Lightfoot acts as an inspiration for the band when it comes to writing, with admiration coming for his song writing and ability to tell a story through song. It comes as no surprise that one of the songs to be covered is a track that Lightfoot considers one of his strongest; The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald. It tells the tale of the infamous shipwreck in 1975 where 29 men lost their lives to Lake Superior, and is a slow moving ballad that captures the story behind the disaster. Other songs recorded were Carefree Highway, Protocol and Early Morning Rain.
Arbouretum are currently touring the UK. It is unclear if any of the covers will be played, but if you make yourself heard loud enough who knows what may be coming your way. Dates are below. The ‘John Peel’ style session is released on August 26th via Southern Records’ Latitudes.
