Californian garage rocker Ty Segall yesterday announced yet another album, Fudge Sandwich. Set for release on October 26th via In The Red Records, you can pre-order the LP here for 12″ coloured vinyl.

Unusually for Ty, the new record is a collection of eleven covers of some of his favourite songs. In a tongue-in-cheek press release, In The Red explained the move. ‘Ty Segall is a fan of music. He lives in Los Angeles, but has lived in San Francisco and Laguna Beach. Ty is obsessed with ceviche and loves being outside. He is 31 years old. For fun, he recorded a covers album of songs he loves. This includes songs by Amon Düül II, John Lennon, Sparks, War, Funkadelic, Rudimentary Peni, Grateful Dead, Spencer Davis Group, and more. Ty loves so many songs. This particular covers collection is called Fudge Sandwich, and the album art… has a picture of a fudge sandwich on it.’ 

Compared to the grand solo outings of Manipulator, Goodbye Bread and Freedom’s Goblin, it seems that Ty himself isn’t taking Fudge Sandwich too seriously. ‘He hopes you like it. If you don’t, it’s ok because he really just made it for fun. Ty is currently taking his dog, Fanny, for a walk.’

In a varied and choice selection, Fudge Sandwich will see Ty taking on some of the 20th-century’s greatest artists. One standout to look out for is track three, ‘Isolation’, originally released on John Lennon’s seminal solo record John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band: an album on which the ex-Beatle famously mourned the loss of his parents in a mixture of piano ballads, proto-grunge rockers and primal screams. Ty gave us a sneak-peek of the new album with the single, ‘I’m A Man’, originally written and performed by the Spencer Davis Group in early-1967, when frontman Stevie Winwood was just eighteen-years-old.
