Grime maestro J Hus has been arrested and charged in East London with carrying a knife. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a huge breakthrough in the last year or so, but was stopped by police in Stratford on June 21. Upon his vehicle’s occupants being searched, J Hus- real name Momodou Jallow- was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a knife or bladed article.
He has since been denied bail at Thames Magistrates Court, and will remain in custody until his trial, due on July 20.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan police said: “Officers in a marked police car stopped a vehicle in International Way, E20, at about 12:35pm on Thursday 21 June. The occupants of the vehicle were searched and a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a knife/bladed article.” The Met later confirmed to BBC Newsbeat the arrested man was J Hus.
Jallow was scheduled to perform at multiple festivals during this summer’s season, including Glasgow’s TRSNMT festival and O2 wireless, both due before his scheduled trial date. Representatives of J Hus are yet to comment on any changes to these dates, or address the arrest at all.
Earlier this year, J Hus told NME that he was already done with his next album, and the follow-up to 2017’s meteoric Common Sense, revealing that it was hoping to be released as early as August. “I’m already working on a new album,” he said. “Hopefully we can release it for about August. I’m working on it, nearly done. Hopefully I can get Skepta on it.”
