The British singer Lily Allen has announced that she will be releasing an upcoming autobiography which is due to be published in Autumn 2018.
The as-yet-untitled book will be the result of a deal made between Lily and Bonnier Publishing’s imprint Blink, and could be “uncomfortable, shocking and brutal” stated Lily.
The Bookseller reports that Allen’s memoir will focus on “the trauma and grief of losing a child, the highs and lows of fame, her family story, growing up in Britpop, Glastonbury and the infamous Groucho club”.
Allen will also write “about ‘the rebellion of her youth’, money, co-dependency, drug and alcohol dependency, eating disorders, marriage, separation, recovery, motherhood and ‘moving forward with her life’.”
When Allen fell pregnant for the first time in September 2007, to Ed Simmons of Chemical Brothers, she unfortunately suffered a miscarriage in January 2008, causing the relationship to come to an end and Lily spending three weeks in a psychiatric clinic due to depression following the miscarriage. She then tragically contracted a viral infection while pregnant to her new partner Sam Cooper in 2010, causing her to suffer a stillbirth. In 2011 the pair went on to marry, and give birth to her 1st daughter in 2011 and second in 2013.
Lily stated that she won’t feel shameful about writing the content of the book as it all the truth. However did want to get across that it won’t all be doom and gloom as “there will be good stuff in there too; happy times. I will try and make it funny”.
Since her first single ‘Smile’ way back in July 2006 that reached number one in the UK charts, Lily has earned a host of awards including a Brit award for British female solo artist in 2010, NME’s best solo artist in 2014 and a Grammy nomination. Two successful studio albums later, Allen announced that she would be taking a hiatus from making music. Then in 2011, she launched her own record label which lead to her third album release Sheezus in 2013.
It was hinted that Allen would be releasing a fourth album possibly in June, rumoured to be titled The Fourth Wall. Lily mentioned on her podcast News Roast that it will mainly deal with herself, her relationship with her children, the breakdown of her marriage and substance abuse. Allen has been working with Mark Ronson, and has leaked one track from the album, titled “Family Man.
Dunn of Bookseller said: “A book like this doesn’t come along very often. We were completely blown away by the proposal and sample material. It will not only appeal to her generation and fans of her music, but speaks to a wider polemic about the issues society faces today.”
