Gorillaz have surprised fans with a brand new single today, featuring none other than London’s own Little Simz. You can check the track out below.
The track was premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show earlier today, and Gorillaz head honcho Damon Albarn spoke very highly of the promising London MC. “I just was really struck by her kind of individualism,” Albarn told Lowe “She’s just not part of a scene, which is great for her.”
The reason for the single being such a surprise is down to the band releasing their long-awaited fifth album Humanz earlier this year, and Albarn and co. were stopping off to see Zane Lowe in the middle of an extensive world tour in support of the album.
Albran himself has suggested that further surprise releases could be in the pipeline for Gorillaz, potentially extending as far as a full album in the future. The band also have some history for doing this, releasing 2010’s The Fall with just five days notice before being released for a free download.
When asked by Q about the potential future record- and Gorillaz’s fondness for surprise releases- Albarn answered “I really like the idea of making new music and playing it live almost simultaneously […] It will be a more complete record than ‘The Fall’, but hopefully have that spontaneity.”
Gorillaz will return to British shores for a stint of dates from late November through to early December. you can see the full list of dates below, and buy tickets here.
