Kurupt FM of The BBC Three hit ‘People Just Do Nothing’, have just released a new single named ‘Suttin Like That’ this week, after recently getting signed to XL Recordings.
The garage crew’s new tune was first dropped on MistaJam’s show on BBC Radio 1 on 25th October, by the lead characters of the show and Grindah and Decoy and will be available to buy and stream this Friday 27th October. Listen to the song here.
This world premiere of the track is anticipating their awaited release of a new, hour long mix-tape named ‘The Lost Tape’, set to be released on November 17th. It is said in the press release that this lost tape has been discovered after “the legendary set that was broadcast live on Kurupt FM 108.9 and was recorded onto cassette tape by an anonymous listener, was lost in a backpack in deepest Brentford”. It has had a refurbishment to bring it up to scratch, being remixed and re-vamped to create the ultimate garage mix-tape.
People Just Do Nothing is a British ‘mockumentary’ series, appearing on BBC Three, following a pirate radio show based in West London under the name of ‘Kurupt FM’, and was first broadcast back in 2014. The show was created by the cast themselves, and follows the lives of garage and drum and bass fanatics from Brentford, trying to get their music heard.
Kurupt FM is made up of MC Grindah (Allan Mustafa), DJ Beats (Hugo Chegwin), DJ Steves (Steve Stamp), Decoy (Daniel Sylvester Wood) and their manager, Chabuddy G (Asim Chaudhry).
The inspiration for the BAFTA award winning show is said to be inspired from the UK Television series ‘The Office’, as it has that loose documentary style of being interviewed, and also following the character’s personal lives, which the boys used to watch when they would all hang out together back in the day. The four main actors were friends for years before they began making the show and were part of an actual real pirate station named Kurupt FM, where they all would dabble in MC’ing and DJ’ing. This is where the idea came from and once they started writing material and creating characters around a ‘fake garage crew’ to make comedy out of the situation they were in, they released YouTube videos portraying their ideas under the name ‘Wasteman TV’, it got noticed by producer Joe Petrie, and thus the TV series was born.
The four main actors minus their manager came together to form the musical act that tours, appears on radio, and now releasing music under a label all in character as ‘Kurupt FM’. After the rise of the genre grime last year and this year, its no surprise Kurupt landed a major recording deal with XL Recordings, home to big names like Adele and Radiohead.
