This week saw Liam Gallagher reach number one in the Official UK Album Charts with his debut solo album ‘As you Were’. The former Oasis front man released the record last week on October 6th, and it surged straight to the top spot along with breaking a few records.
As You Were scored massive sales and is the third quickest selling album of 2017 so far, and the ninth fastest selling debut of the decade. This is Gallagher’s first musical release since his previous band ‘Beady Eye’ brought out BE in 2013, after his split from the worldwide know rock band Oasis.
Through the combined sales of physical and digital copies, as well as vinyl’s, it has shifted an impressive 103,000 copies already. As You Were, released on Warner Bros Records UK, also triumphed to be the most streamed album of the week. 103,000 is nearly double the opening week total of Oasis debut Definitely Maybe, which sold 56,000 copies in seven days after its release in 1994.
Another success for the album was in vinyl sales, managing to sell 16,000, giving Gallagher the largest one-week sale for vinyls in over 20 years, as well as topping the official vinyl albums chart. According to the Official Charts Company, Gallagher’s LP was outselling the rest of the top 20 combined midweek of the release, with sales and streams of 79,000. This kind of victory for an album hasn’t been seen since Ed Sheeran’s third album Divide.
To add to the list of achievements Liam also proved the negative comments wrong that he wouldn’t beat his older brother Noels debut record Benchmark.
Liam seems to exceed his own expectations for the album, after an interview with Music Week in Berlin he said: “It would be nice to be No.1 but I’ll take anything. Just because it’s No.3 or No.5 doesn’t mean that this is a bad record and I’ll wash my hands of it, and then I’ll never want fucking anything to do with it ever again. It’ll still be fucking close to my heart, but it would be nice to be No.1.”
The Wall Of Glass singer showed his reaction to the achievements and congratulates himself in a video message with the Official Charts Company after the incredible performance of the album. He told fans: “I wanna thank everyone who bought it. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make it. As you were.”
Gallagher also went online to Twitter to thanks the fans again:
It’s official Rock n Roll is No1 congratulations to you to me congratulations to all of us for making it happen as you were LG x
