Corinne Bailey Rae has recently released the official music video for her new single “New York Transit Queen”. The English singer-songwriter revealed the song in June as the first single from her upcoming album Black Rainbows which is due for release on September 15.

Announcing the video on Twitter, Bailey Rae wrote, “SOO happy to share the official video for “New York Transit Queen” with you all! All of my appreciation to Gregory Berg for directing a wonderful video and of course to Audrey Smaltz, the original NY Transit Queen.”

“New York Transit Queen” was inspired by a photograph of Audrey Smeltz, winner of the Miss New York Transit pageant in 1954. Corinne Bailey Rae revealed her inspiration for the song on Instagram: “Audrey Smaltz won the transit queen competition in 1954, when she was 17-years-old. With “New York Transit Queen,” I wanted to write an ode to this photograph of Smaltz that I saw at Stony Island Arts Bank and the incredible arc of life she’s lived since then.”

Best known for her 2006 single “Put Your Records On”, Corinne Jacqueline Bailey Rae became the fourth female British musician to have her first album debut at number one. She released her first album Corinne Bailey Rae on February 24, 2007 and it has been certified triple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. The album included songs “Like a Star”, “Put Your Records On”, “Trouble Sleeping”, and “I’d Like To”.

In addition to this album, she has released two other albums The Sea in 2010 and The Heart Speaks in Whispers. The Sea debuted at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart while The Heart Speaks in Whispers debuted at number 31.

This year, the singer will also be touring North America from September 5 until October 7. She will start her tour at the Staller Center in Long Island New York, and end at Saint George Hall in Marfa, Texas. After Bailey Rae’s North American tour, she will be performing on three dates at the Ladbroke Hall in London.
