Dave Grohl and his merry band of Foo Fighters debuted a new song over the the weekend, during their performance at Iceland’s Secret Solstice Festival on June 16.
During their set, the band also treated fans to a live debut of new song ‘Run’, as well as ‘The Sky is a Neighbourhood’, a more raw version of which was played at a benefit gig in May, before being polished up for the Icelandic crowd. ‘Run’ was a surprise release on June 1, and as of yet there has been no title- or any real details, for that matter- pertaining to the band’s upcoming ninth album.
Ever the band to treat their fans, the Foos closed their set with a song that hadn’t even been heard before, let alone performed live. ” Fuck it” Grohl told the baying crowd “I just wanna play new stuff.”
Grohl’s daughter Harper also joined the band on drums for their cover of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’. She’s eight. It was the first time the band had covered the song since 2006, and Grohl explained to the audience that his daughter had been asking the former Nirvana tub-thumper to teach her the drums. “Sure, why not play what you learn in front of 20,000 people?” Grohl told the s he introduced the song he said: “There’s another Grohl on the drumset now.”
The band will now turn their attentions to next weekend’s Glastonbury festival, which they are headlining on Saturday, Jun 24. The set will mark the band’s return to the historic site of the world’s biggest music festival, having previously being forced to cancel two years ago, after Dave Grohl broke his leg onstage, forcing them to pull out so the frontman could recover from the injury.
Speaking to NME, Grohl revealed earlier this year that he couldn’t wait to return to the Somerset festival, to make things right after 2015. “Personally it’s almost like a part of my recovery. I’m making up for something I couldn’t do when I was just completely broken… I’m coming back and I’m standing up and I’m gonna kick their ass for 2 hours or more. I can’t wait. I’m already psyched: it’s gonna be amazing.”
