Quebec-born experimental/post rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor have announced a mammoth list of tour dates for 2022 and 2023, including a large number of UK and EU shows. You can find more information here, and you can view the UK dates at the end of the article.
The group’s 2022 UK appearances will include three consecutive shows at London’s Electric Ballroom in Camden, as well as shows in Coventry and Manchester.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor released their seventh full-length album last year, entitled G_d’s Pee at State’s End!. The record is their first since 2017’s Luciferian Towers. The group makes a very welcome return to familiar sonic territory; they are not quite exploring previously untapped musical avenues, however this is no issue at all, as the riveting record sees them perfecting an already well-loved sound.
The record received plenty of acclaim from fans and critics alike, with Wall Street Journal saying: A ferocious, thrilling blast of energy… impossibly dramatic music with a symphonic sense of scale. Though Godspeed works with specific structural parameters – long compositions, gradual builds and titanic, cathartic climaxes – it finds untapped expressive possibilities. This excellent record from this one-of-a-kind project might require time for its lengthy pieces to sink in, but the stirring and emotionally resonant music more than rewards the effort.”
Meanwhile, Kerrang! went on to say: “The last twelve months have felt very Godspeed You! Black Emperor. As does this record… For all the existential dread contained therein, G_d’s Pee… also includes moments of elegiac beauty, as on shorter tracks “Fire At Static Valley” and the exquisite “OUR SIDE HAS TO WIN (for D.H.)”. Resisting social media and releasing just two grainy press shots in a quarter of a century, Godspeed remain wary of the mainstream. But as the world spins inexorably towards tipping point, they’ve never sounded as central to their times.”
