Radiohead side-project The Smile have been demonstrating their prolificacy lately following the release of their debut album A Light for Attracting Attention.
The trio, consisting of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood alongside Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, have now debuted not one, but two new songs on their current EU tour. Last week, the group performed a new song called “Friend of a Friend” in Croatia, a tune that they had written the same day they performed it. Now, the band has unveiled a new tune called “Bodies Laughing” during a show in Berlin. Footage has emerged on YouTube of the band performing the song, which you can see down below.
Much like “Friend of a Friend”, Yorke said that “Bodies Laughing” had been written the very same day that the group chose to perform it, saying: “So, yesterday we wrote another new song…So we’re gonna try and play it.”
As you can observe from the title of the YouTube footage, there seems to be some speculation that the song is an unheard Radiohead B-side from the archives of the band’s In Rainbows era. Listening to the tune’s mellow guitars, tight drums and Yorke’s soulful, reverberant crooning, it’s not hard to see why such an idea would be thrown around.
You can also listen to/watch live footage of “Friend of a Friend” down below.
In other recent news regarding The Smile, the band are currently (as you may have already gathered) on tour in Europe, and will be very busy performance-wise for the next few months. All information regarding their live appearances, including tickets, can be found here.
The group have also recently been added to the line-up for the forthcoming Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds headlining show at All Points East Festival in London, which will also include acts such as Japanese Breakfast, Sleaford Mods and Michael Kiwanuka. More information regarding All Points East can be found here.
Of course, I probably can’t conclude this article without pointing you towards The Smile’s riveting debut full-length album A Light for Attracting Attention, which was released two weeks ago to very warm reception indeed, from both fans and critics alike. You can listen to the album on all streaming services, and you can stream the hypnotic tune “Thin Thing” at the link below.
