Sorcha Richardson is someone who bleeds poetic music, from forming her first band at the tender age of 10 with some school mates, to her studies in creative writing. Her debut album First Prize Bravery landed her a nomination for the Choice Music Prize in 2019. Her new song “Archie” seems to look to extend her meteoric rise to stardom in her own lowkey fashion.
“Archie” flows through beautifully mellow melodies and contains subtle American country influences with its use of twanged guitar tones. The deeply personal nature of her material pairs both a lachrymose sense of self-reflection with powerful moments of defiant abandon. The lyric; “I’ve been making posters, tryna start a band”shows a person living out their fantasy as they look back on their journey to this point in time. This latest track sets Richardson out as an artist now fully formed now at the height of her powers, with many of us keenly awaiting what is to come next.

Discussing the song, Richardson explained; “’Archie’ is a song about teenage hopes and dreams and about losing touch with the people who you once shared them with, I wrote the earliest version of it at a writing camp in the Spring of 2021 with some of my favourite Irish songwriters. It was the one song from the camp that I kept coming back to but I would have left it off the album if not for Alex Casnoff’s influence. He was a real guiding light with this one. We recorded it at The Clinic in Dublin with my band mates Joe Furlong, Cian Hanley and Jake Curran and it’s quickly become my favourite song to play live. As lame as it sounds, it makes me feel like I’m living out my teenage dreams when we play it. I think that’s one of the greatest feelings you can have.”
Richardson’s next most recent release saw her cover the Johnny Nash classic “I Can See Clearly Now” in a beautiful reimagining that puts a strange inflection on the 70s hit. You can listen to her take on the song down below:
