Lady Gaga has consented to a TV interview with Piers Morgan, to discuss attitudes towards rape and Post-traumatic stress disorder, after Morgan had voiced that he was ‘sceptical’ about the singer’s claims.
Last week, Gaga posted an impassioned open letter on her Born This Way Foundation website. In the letter she described her “daily effort” to regulate her condition, whilst urging others to “overcome their shame” in discussing their conditions, despite many negative attitudes towards mental illness, saying “It’s important that you know that there is hope and a chance for recovery.”
On December 10, Piers Morgan took to Twitter to voice his cynicism, saying that it “angers” him when celebrities “claim PTSD about everything to promote themselves”, citing being raised by a “big military family” as his reason for this. Morgan described mental ilness as “the latest celebrity accessory”,and targeted Madonna as well, suggesting that he “wouldn’t automatically believe anything either Madonna or Lady Gaga claimed about their lives,” referring to Madonna’s 2013 interview where she talked about being raped at knife point.
Gaga fired back at Morgan through Twitter, to talk about the work she has done with outgoing Vice President Joe Biden, on “helping educate people about why women don’t report [rape]” and that she would “love to share it [with] you some time.” Morgan accepted her offer, but the debate continued, with Gaga keen to prove to the British journalist that PTSD was “not just a “military” disorder”, and describing a “mental health youth epidemic” in this day and age. Morgan continued to force his opinion, saying “I know numerous soldier with PTSD, it’s a very serious thing. I also know people who claim to have it but clearly don’t.”
After the interview was informally arranged, Morgan then tweeted to say “I’ll be pressing my meat suit”, in reference to the singer’s infamous outfit at the 2010 Video Music Awards. Gaga crisply responded against the comment, claiming that she’d be happy to discuss the matter with a different interviewer if he continued to “shame” her.
