Adele and Beyonce headline the 2017 Grammy nominations

The full list of Grammy nominations has been released today, and the most nominations have been awarded to the likes of Adele and Beyonce. Following the release of Lemonade this year, Beyonce has collected 9 nominations, including for Song of the Year and Best Music Video, both applying to her track ‘Formation’.

Adele has garnered 5 nominations, and is competing with Beyonce for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the year. Interestingly, Song of the Year is a separate entity to Record of the Year due to the aesthetic focus being solely on songwriting, whereas Record of the Year looks at aspects like performance and production.

The two singers will be vying for Album of the Year alongside heavyweights like Drake’s Views and Justin Bieber’s Purpose, as well as country singer Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. There was some controversy amongst fans at the omission of Frank Ocean, after it s reports that transpired that he was not eligible for nomination. Pitchfork has reported that Sturgill Simpson himself has been quoted saying that he wishes that Ocean had received a nomination for Album of the Year, instead of him. There was also some outcry from fans that David Bowie’s Blackstar and Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo did not receive more recognition.

Chance the Rapper leads the nominations in regard to hip-hop nominations, having accumulated 7 for himself. The Chicago rapper to to Twitter to express his thanks for the nominations. Chance has also made history in being nominated for his work on Coloring Book, as it is the first ever stream-exclusive album to be nominated.
