The song is somewhat of a departure from the way the band used to write. According to a press release, Twin Temple’s Zachary James said: “this time we played every instrument ourselves (other than the saxophone) as well as produced, engineered and mixed the record ourselves. We still kept everything analog and one take to give it a raw feel, but it was just the two of us in the studio together doing everything. It allowed us to expand the sounds and gave us the freedom to add more instrumentation. We always like to stir the cauldron and change things up, and we were excited about challenging ourselves in this evil new way.”
Alexandra James added, commenting on the Spanish version of the song: “We love Latin music. It’s an integral part of early Doo-Wop and a huge influence on us. This latest single is us continuing to explore that concept and sound in our own blasphemous way, of course. We chose to have a flip cover for the 7” as opposed to having an A-Side and B-Side so that the Spanish and English versions are equal. They’ll be released simultaneously as well, to reflect that equality.”
Down to their production, Twin Temple’s music truly fits their self-described “Satanic doo-wop” label; they play a style of late ‘50s flavoured pop music that has notably eerie quality to it, sounding on occasion like a clean-cut group of rock ‘n’ rollers joined the cabal from Rosemary’s Baby. The duo’s music that feels like it would be played at a high school disco in 1950s suburban America, but instead of singing innocent, syrupy tunes about rockin’ and a rollin’ and holding your crush’s hand, they sing about the devil. It’s pretty fantastic.
Twin Temple are presently on tour in the US with Ghost and Volbeat, and will be embarking on an EU and UK tour later this year with Ghost and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. The band will also be playing at Download Festival in June. Tickets for their EU/UK tour can be purchased here, and ticket information for Download Festival can be found here.
