NME is reporting that grime juggernaut Skepta has continued his prolific year, following the news of his fourth album, Konnichiwa has been certified gold in the United Kingdom, after selling over 100,000 CDs. The long awaited album was finally released in May of this year, to much acclaim, and was celebrated by a special launch party in Tokyo, which the North London rapper live streamed simultaneously.

Konnichiwa was Skepta’s first album since 2011’s Doin’ it Again, and was produced and recorded fully independently, on the MC’s Boy Better Know label. The album’s qualities were then recognised fully in September, when Skepta became the first grime artist to win the Mercury prize since Dizzee Rascal with Boy in Da Corner in 2003. As a result of the triumph, Konnichiwa then enjoyed a sales surge of 174%, launching it firmly back into the album charts, after climbing 40 places.

To acknowledge the success, and thank his fans for the support, Skepta took to Instagram, exclaiming “WE DID IT…Infinite thanks to everybody listening worldwide for real”, before uploading a video of himself dancing to Spandau Ballet’s 80’s classic ‘Gold’, as seen here.

Last week Skepta and multiple other members of Boy Better Know were also nominated for several MOBO awards, with Skepta himself being nominated for est male, best album and best grime act. In August, just before the vote for the Mercury Prize, The entirety of Boy Better Know appeared at Reading and Leeds Festival, playing a raucous set to thousands, on their first time playing the Main Stage.
