Over the weekend, V9 has dropped the tracklist for new mixtape Murk with a Mouth, with features from Ghetts, fellow 9ers Unknown T and Jimmy, and many others. Set to drop on the 19th of November, the new project was announced on V9’s instagram, with retro graphic novel visuals, thematically linked to his Deadpool mask that he never fails to don in public. Alongside the album release, he is hosting a launch party at a secret location on the 18th of November, one day before its release.
Murk with a Mouth includes previously released tracks from V9, including “Hole in One” and “Change” that both came complete with visuals. Coming with a length of 15 tracks, the project promises a substantial glut of new tunes from V9. Long-time collaborator and fellow 9er Unknown T is to feature on the album, following his success earlier this year with Adolescence. Listen to one of the album cuts, “Hole in One”, released this summer and featuring Billy Billions, below:
Hailing from Homerton, V9 broke out in 2019 with the track “Charged Up”, containing some of his most iconic lyrics to date. With his instantly and highly recognisable Deadpool mask, V9 remains consistently on the rader in drill. Embracing imagery from Japanese popular culture and comic book culture, he dubs himself ‘sensei’ on Instagram and makes numerous anime references in his music. In an interview with Acclaim, he says “I played video games and that. Sports. You get it? Trust me, all of that. I was a video game head. Anime”, “Dragon Ball Z, old FIFA Pro, Sonic, Getaway. Copious games.”
Amid claims that the drill music that V9 produces encites or glorifies violence, V9 says “Brother, you got niggas like Eminem who be talking wild on songs it wasn’t called Drill music it was called hip-hop, even when hip-hop first came out they were going ‘hip-hop’s too violent’ and ‘we got to stop hip-hop.’” In the same interview with Acclaim, he goes onto say that “Rappers are just rapping, doesn’t mean it’s all true. It’s entertainment, we’re entertainers trying to get some money. Doesn’t mean it’s actually true. Doesn’t mean we’re going to go out there and do something mad.” The controversy around drill is well publicised, especially amid a rise in stabbings in the capital.
